A successful marriage is the most precious gift that one can share in this world. In Indian culture, people believe that a married couple has the power to initiate the process of rebirth and renewal because their union always brings new life into the world. In Indian culture, marriages are considered sacred and were not only important to ensure continuity between generations by procreation but also facilitated spiritual and social well-being especially at a time when large percentages of people lived in poverty and isolation. For those who consider themselves as the naive and those who have not been sheltered from the evils of this world, marrying a woman from a different caste or background is tantamount to a bold step into the unknown. However, modernization has brought forth a lot of social changes that have made marriages a matter of convenience rather than an obligation to be fulfilled. It is for this reason that people have started questioning their standards and rituals regarding getting married. In expressing this change, many filmmakers have chosen to explore these issues through films. These films have been a testament to the real world marriage situations that exist in the country. In the 1980s, a number of films were made on what was considered to be a wrong or taboo topic, which was prevailing in society at the time. In the early 1980s, there was a booming interest in horror films and true-to-life horror stories. Directors such as Shyam Benegal and Adoor Gopalakrishnan brought out several movies that dealt with various social issues that existed in society at that time. While some of these movies were not commercially successful, there is no denying the fact that they had created awareness regarding this particular issue among millions of people. Although there have been various films in the past that have dealt with this subject, in recent times, there have been an increasing number of movies that have focused on the problem of arranged marriages. Arranged marriages are still a reality that exists today in India. However, today’s generation has become more exposed to western culture which has led them to demand more amenities when it comes to marriage. This has led to conflicting thoughts about the sanctity of traditional marriages. On one hand, there are people who believe in the old-fashioned definition of marriage where men are expected to marry women from their own community or caste. On the other hand, there are people who believe that marriages should be based on love rather than the social system. Due to this, there are still arranged marriages taking place in our society today. Arranged marriages are described as those where the couple does not meet before marriage. Marriage is usually based on dowry or family alliances. The film ‘Tujhe Meri Kasam’ is based on one such story of an arranged marriage which brings conflict into the lives of both the bride and groom.
